St Edward King and Martyr

Cambridge

Michaelmas Term 2007

St. Edwards has stood at the heart of Cambridge throughout the long history of the University. We hope you will find in this church an inclusive and welcoming community, teaching to stimulate and challenge you and a place of prayer where your spiritual life can develop and grow as we come closer, together to the mystery of God

Sundays at 11am

The service varies in character from the Mattins of the 1662 Prayer Book, through liturgically rich communion services, to the innovations of Odyssey

Odyssey

The Odyssey service makes links between soul life and today's global issues. It is especially open and user-friendly for people who don't normally connect with church.

October 7th
Professor Brian Thorne
Mystical Experience in a Secular Age
Brian Thorne, former Director of Counselling at the University of East Anglia and author of over 20 books on the interface of Christianity and counselling, will focus on the fact that spiritual experience is still very common in our so-called ‘secular’ age.

November 4th
Revd Angela Tilby
Can Liberal Christianity Nourish Us?
Angela Tilby is Vicar of the neighbouring parish of St Benet’s, and a well-known author and broadcaster. In this sermon she will explore whether and how liberal forms of Christianity can meet people’s spiritual needs and really nourish them.

December 9th
Revd Dr John Polkinghorne
Nature and Providence
John Polkinghorne was a distinguished theoretical physicist who for 25 years has helped people to rethink Christianity for a scientific age. He will explore how the Christian belief in the providence of God can be reconciled with the laws of nature.

Panel on Angels

Wednesday June 6th 5.30 pm

Following the June Odyssey service, there will be a panel discussion on angels with Thomas D'Andrea, Malcolm Guite and Fraser Watts.

Healing

Every other month there is laying on of hands for healing at the 5.00 pm Eucharist. This term it will be on May 13th and July 15th.

Sundays at 5pm

Meditative Eucharist

Space and stillness, words and music to draw you into God's presence in bread and wine.

Guided Meditation

Fridays at 5.30 pm

An introduction to the Christian practice of meditation, and a regular opportunity to make the journey into silence with the support of others.

Goth Eucharist

Alternate Tuesdays 8.45 pm

Takes place before Goth night at Cambar. Rich liturgy and sermons that are not afraid to deal with dark and difficult issues.

Goth Eucharists will resume on September 11th & 25th (Tuesdays at 8.45 pm). Malcolm will preach on ‘Veils and Faces’. Veiling and unveiling are key themes in the scripture as well as in the way we live. These two sermons will explore the theme of how God might be veiled to us, or we to one another and ourselves, and how we might dare to be unveiled and encounter ourselves and one another face to face.

House Group on the Sayings of Jesus

April 16th & 30th, May 14th & 28th, June 11th & 25th, July 9th. Alternate Mondays, 8.00 pm at St Mark's Vicarage, Barton Road.

The fortnightly house group will be looking together at the sayings of Jesus. We will study the way they are presented in the different gospels and try to discern what they might mean for us now. Feel free to join the group at any stage.

Sexuality Discussion Group

An open-minded exploration of issues about sexual orientation with other Christians.

May 20th & June 17th at 3.30 pm

Holistic Spirituality Group

April 15th & 29th, May 13th & 27th, June 10th & 24th at 3:30pm

We will be looking at "angels and visions" in the coming weeks. Are angels part of contemporary spiritual life? Are there similarities between visionary experiences recorded in the different faiths? We will be drawing on our own experience of prayer as well as the teachings of major faiths. Everybody welcome to join at any stage.

Children of Abraham

On Wednesdays at 5.30 pm in October (starting Oct 3rd) there will be a series of talks on the three great world faiths that are heirs to Abraham: Jews, Christians and Muslims. It is increasingly clear that peace on our planet depends on people of different faiths being able to live together, and it is a crucial step towards that for us to understand one another better. The talks will be based on a series of books, ‘What do We Believe’, and the main speakers will be Zia Sardar, Ed Kessler & Malcolm Guite. Further details soon.
