Organists: In finding a new organist to replace Stephen Rose, it has proved easier to find separate people for mornings and evenings than to find one person to do both. From September, Sam Hays will play for Sunday mornings, and Ralph Woodward will play for Sunday evenings. By coincidence, both are former organ scholars of Queens’ College. Sam also conducts the chapel choir at Queens’ in the evenings, and Ralph plays at St Benet’s Church in the mornings. It is not yet clear how long term either of them will be, but they will at least see us through the next few months. They are both excellent musicians and good people to work with, and we are fortunate to have their services. Stephen’s last regular Sunday will be 28th August, but he will return to play for the Harvest Festival Service at 11 o'clock on 25th September, and will give a farewell recital in Church at 2.00 pm on that day. If there is a piece of music you would like him to play on that occasion, please let Marcus or one of the Churchwardens know, or contact Stephen himself (stephen.rose@rhul.ac.uk). The Harvest Festival will be a good occasion for us to express thanks to Stephen for all he has done, and to make a presentation to him.
During September the pattern or organists will be;
Sept 4th 11.00am Sam 5.00pm Ralph
Sept 11th 11.00am Sam 5.00pm Ralph
Sept 18th 11.00am Sam 5.00pm Sam
Sept 25th 11.00am Stephen 5.00pm Ralph
September 25th: Canon Owen Spencer-Thomas who will preach at Harvest Festival Mattins on Sept 25th is Diocesan Director of Communications. There will be the usual lunch afterwards in Trinity Hall, open to members of all our congregations; there will be a list to sign at the back of the Church in due course. The Revd Matthew Hughes who will preach at 5.00 pm on Sept 25th is Rector of Farnborough
Living Faith: There are four remaining sessions of the Living Faith course. These will restart at 19, Grantchester Road after the parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The first session will be at 7.30pm on Wednesday September 14th. Please speak to Marcus if you would like to join this group.
Holy Land: There will be a parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land from Sept 5th to 12th. Sixteen people are going. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers. Peter Marshall will be giving an illustrated talk to those going on the trip a few days beforehand.
Autumn Talks: A series of talks has been arranged for the autumn on Wednesdays at 5.30 pm, starting with Bishop David Jenkins, former Bishop of Durham, on October 12th. Further details next month.
Vicar-Chaplain’s Letter
Whilst flying back from a holiday in Egypt I was deeply shocked to read in the newspapers of the tragic murder of Brother Roger of Taize during evening prayer at the community in Burgundy, France. I have been to Taize, leading groups, five times and it has had a revolutionary impact upon my own spirituality and faith and has deeply touched everyone I know who has spent time there. At Taize the abiding impression you are left with is an overwhelming sense of hope and optimism that the Christian life is being embraced by young people all over the world, that the Churches do have a bright and vibrant future and that thousands of people are working out their faith by fostering peace and reconciliation in their own countries. Brother Roger, who founded Taize in 1940, has been widely regarded in the Christian world as a living saint, and such a description is not inaccurate. I remember meeting him in Taize and having lunch with him when I was a curate and my bishop, Archbishop George Carey gave me a letter to deliver to them. His presence was one of almost tangible calmness and peace. His death is a tragic loss to the Churches, please remember his soul in your prayers, and the young woman who murdered him, I am sure Brother Roger would not have hesitated to forgive his assailant. His life is a remarkable example of Christian living which is a powerful inspiration for us in our own Christian journeying.
Fraser has now started his partial sabbatical from St. Edward’s and I want to thank him myself for his devotion to the Church over the past decade. I am very much looking forward to working with all the Church family over the next few months to help build on Fraser’s undoubted success at making St. Edward’s a warm, friendly and vibrant Church in the heart of Cambridge. We are developing an exciting programme of events for this coming Autumn which will be detailed in a booklet over the course of this month.
