Reformation Martyrs: The Commemoration of Reformation Martyrs this year will be at 11.00 am on Sunday 28th October, and the preacher will be Malcolm Guite. St Edward's is almost certainly the first church in the UK where the Reformers preached, in 1525, and from the pulpit that we still use. So, this an important commemoration for us..
Holistic Spirituality Group: The group, led by Malcolm, will meet on Sundays October 14th & 28th at 3.30 pm. At present it is discussing the relationship between spiritual direction, counseling, being 'soul friends' etc.
Organists:Welcome to Oliver Lomberg, Senior Organ Scholar at Peterhouse, who will now be playing regularly for us on Sunday mornings. Ralph Woodward will continue to play on Sunday evenings.
Goth Eucharists: There will be Goth Eucharists for the new term on 9th & 23rd October at 8.45 pm.
Children of Abraham: On Wednesdays at 5.30 pm in October (starting Oct 3rd) there will be a series of talks on the three great world faiths that are heirs to Abraham: Jews, Christians and Muslims. It is increasingly clear that peace on our planet depends on people of different faiths being able to live together, and it is a crucial step towards that for us to understand one another better. The talks will be based on a series of books, 'What do We Believe', and the main speakers will be Zia Sardar, Ed Kessler & Malcolm Guite. Further details soon.
Linda Duckers who was attached to St Edward's while training for the ministry, and is now Curate in the Leek and Meerbrook Team Ministry in the Diocese of Lichfield, will be ordained priest at Michaelmas.
Elaine Storkey, Broadcaster, Lecturer & President of Tear Fund, will give a talk at 7.30 pm on Thursday 18th October in Ely Cathedral, on 'Women of the Global South'.
Chaplains' Letter:Psychology at St Edward's
Psychology has been a significant strand in the work of St Edward's in recent
years. This month's Odyssey, at which Brian Thorne will be the speaker, reflects
that aspect of our work. The Beta course, which we piloted a few years back,
was another. Two years ago we had a series of talks on Jesus and Psychology,
that form the basis of a book that I have edited and which has just been published
by DLT.
Why is there a link between psychology and Christianity? Psychology is partly
about how people change, and Christianity is also about change. Psychology
has sometimes presented challenges to religion but, as often happens, Christianity
has emerged stronger for rising to the challenge. In religious faith, it doesn't
just matter what people believe but what personal significance it has for
them, and psychology can help us to understand that. I could go on, but that
is enough to indicate that there is a fruitful connection.
At St Edward's we have quite a large group of people with a psychology background,
and within the next few weeks I hope to gather some of them together to discuss
how best to build on what we have already done. Please let me know if you
would like to be part of that discussion. I hope we can develop some ideas
and plans, and I will report back about that. Fraser Watts
Post-secular Britain: Dangers and opportunities.
It used to be said that we are an increasingly secular society,
in truth it is the other way round; we live in a decreasingly secular society.
On the one hand there is a widespread revival of interest in spirituality,
meditation and the quest for meaning and transcendence in life, on the other
there is a real revival in the faith and influence (for both good and ill)
of major world religions on society. This revival brings an opportunity for
personal renewal and the rediscovery of sane values, but also the danger of
bloody-minded, and literally bloody, religious conflict. It is up to us to
help steer this social change in worthwhile directions, and to do so we need
to be committed and informed.
This term at St. Edwards we will focus on both spirituality and religion as
vital elements in our society. Fraser's series on spirituality at the Meditative
Eucharist will give us a real overview of what is happening in the revival
of spiritual life and of its potential for transforming our life together
and even our politics. Our Wednesday talks this October draw together representatives
of the three major Abrahamic faiths in Britain to give a contemporary take
on living in a multi-faith society. We are lucky to have Ed Kessler and Zia
Sardar , authors respectively of What Do Jews Believe? and What do Muslims
believe? to come and speak at St. Edwards.
There has been a great deal more heat than light in the national media about
Islam in contemporary Britain and about both Muslim-Jewish and Muslim-Christian
relations. Our October series 'Children of Abraham' should be an informative
and stimulating way of redressing the balance. If we are to challenge the
rise of so-called 'fundamentalism' in all three faiths we need to rediscover
and champion the true fundamentals, which these faiths share. So come, if
you possibly can, to hear directly from exponents of these great faiths, as
they explore with us what the path of peace might be nationally and internationally.
