Discussion Groups: Two discussion groups will be re-starting after their summer break. Ann Walton will be leading the next meeting of the Holistic Spirituality Group on ‘John of God and Healing’ A provisional date of 3.30pm on Sunday October 16th has been arranged for this. The Sexuality Discussion Group will re-convene to discuss Bishop David Jenkins’ talk on homosexuality and the Bible at 7.30pm on Monday October 17th in the Clare Chapel.

Les Miserables Theatre Trip: Plans are being made to take a group from St. Edward’s to see a matinee performance of the award-winning musical ‘Les Miserables’ at the Queen’s Theatre in London. We will watch a Saturday matinee performance which will start at 2.30pm. Travelling to London will be by either train or hired coach, depending upon how many people are interested in going. There will be an opportunity for those going to spend a couple of hours shopping or sightseeing. We hope to go on either the first or second Saturday in November. The cost of the trip will depend upon numbers but it will certainly be cheaper going as a group. Les Miserables is a powerful, emotive story with a strong Christian theme which explores the issues of forgiveness and redemption. If you are interested in going please talk to Marcus.

Healing Service: The Meditative Eucharist on October 2nd will also take the form of a Healing Service with the Laying on of hands for those who wish. The theme of the service will be the life of St. Francis, whose feast day falls at that time.

Latimer Commemoration: On October 16th we remember the martyrdom of Hugh Latimer. St. Edward’s has strong historical links with the early Anglican reformers. We are delighted to have as our guest preacher on this occasion, the Dean of Ely, The Very Revd. Dr. Michael Chandler.

Church Website: The website has undergone a major revision and update, and a new e-mail list has been set up for the Church. If you would like to join the e-mail list please send an e-mail with simply ‘subscribe’ in the subject line to either announce-subscribe@st-edwards-cam.org.uk, mjr62@cam.ac.uk or dmg20@cam.ac.uk. The church website can be found at www.st-edwards-cam.org.uk.

Sensing the Sacred: A series of seven sermons, during the 5pm Meditative Eucharist, begins on October 9th. The first two will be given by Marcus Ramshaw, focusing on the eucharist and the importance of places in our Christian life, Nick Buxton will preach on silence on October 23rd, Charles Elliott will focus on Money on October 30th, John Polkinghirne will turn our attention to nature on November 6th and Fraser Watts will conclude the series by reflecting on sexuality and a sacramental view of life on November 13th and November 20th. This promises to be a very exciting and thought-provoking series of sermons.

Autumn Talks: A series of talks given by guest speakers starts on Wednesday October 12th. There are six talks, all starting at  successive Wednesdays, at 5.30pm. On Oct 12th Bishop David Jenkins, the former Bishop of Durham will talk about ‘Reflections on Homosexuality: How to be Wrong on the Bible, on God and on Human Sexuality’. On Oct 19th Professor Everett Worthington of the Virginia Commonwealth University, USA will talk on ‘New Insights about Forgiveness’, on Oct 26th Professor Brian Thorne of The Norwich Centre will talk about ‘Julian of Norwich: The Radical Psychotherapist’. On November 2nd the Revd. Dr. John Polkinghorne, former President of Queens’ College will talk on ‘One Science, Many Faiths’. On November 9th Professor Richard Rubenstein of George Mason University in Washington, USA will talk on ‘Theology and Violence in the 21st Century’ and, finally, on November 16th, the Revd. Dr. Maggi Dawn, Chaplain of Robinson College will talk about ‘Should the Church be ‘Relevant’?

Personal Message from Fraser

Many of you will already have heard that I have been diagnosed as having cancer of the colon, and I will shortly be having surgery. It will be at the Nuffield Hospital (formerly the Evelyn) and probably on Tuesday 27th September. I feel well in myself and am approaching surgery in a positive frame of mind. It is a form of cancer that responds very well to surgery, though I have been warned that recovery from the operation is slow. I feel matter-of-fact about it all, and hope you will all treat it like that too. As far as possible I want it to be 'business as usual'.

It is providential that I have already arranged a partial sabbatical from my Church duties, so alternative arrangements are already largely in place. I hope to start to do one or two things in Church around mid-November, and to be fully fit well before Christmas. However, I will have to wait and see how the process of recovery goes. In the meantime I hope people will understand if I ask not to be visited or telephoned; Marcus or the Churchwardens will have news of my progress. I would, of course, value your prayers.
