Advent Carol Service: We welcome the choir of Trinity Hall at our forthcoming carol service at the beginning of December. This replaces the Meditative Eucharist on Sunday December 4th, starting at 5pm. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served. Please come early to ensure a seat.
Ordinands: We welcome two new ordinands to the life of St. Edward’s for the coming academic year. Andrew Hammond, from Westcott House and Linder Duckers, from Ridley Hall, will both be joining us in our life and worship.
Les Miserables Theatre Trip: Plans are being made to take a group from St. Edward’s to see a matinee performance of the award-winning musical ‘Les Miserables’ at the Queen’s Theatre in London. We will watch a Saturday matinee performance which will start at 2.30pm. Travelling to London will be by either train or hired coach, depending upon how many people are interested in going. There will be an opportunity for those going to spend a couple of hours shopping or sightseeing. We hope to go on either the first or second Saturday in November. The cost of the trip will depend upon numbers but it will certainly be cheaper going as a group. Les Miserables is a powerful, emotive story with a strong Christian theme which explores the issues of forgiveness and redemption. If you are interested in going please talk to Marcus.
All Souls will be kept at the 10.30am Friday Communion on November 4th. There will also be a commemoration of All Souls at the Parish Communion on November 6th. There is a list of names at the back of the church.
Remembrance Sunday: On November 13th we remember the victims of war and conflict throughout the world. Our guest preacher, on this occasion, Canon Derek Stanesby, a former Canon of St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Goth Eucharist: The fortnightly Goth Eucharists have re-started. Services during November take place in the Clare Chapel at 8.30pm on alternate Tuesdays. The November dates are: November 8th and 22nd.
Church Website: The website has undergone a major revision and update, and a new e-mail list has been set up for the Church. If you would like to join the e-mail list please send an e-mail with simply ‘subscribe’ in the subject line to either mjr62@cam.ac.uk or dmg26@cam.ac.uk. The church website can be found at www.st-edwards-cam.org.uk
Sensing the Sacred: This month during the 5pm Meditative Eucharist, we conclude our Autumn series of sermons. Revd Dr. John Polkinghorne, KBE, and former President of Queens’ College will turn our attention to nature, on November 6th, and Fraser Watts will conclude the series by reflecting on sexuality and a sacramental view of life on November 13th and November 20th. This continues to be a very exciting and thought-provoking series of sermons.
Israel Talk: There will be an informal talk with pictures about the recent parish pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land at 7.30pm on Monday November 14th at 19, Grantchester Road. All are welcome to attend. Please let Marcus know if you intend to come.
The Unseen Creation: We are hoping to start a new five week House Group Course on Thursday November 3rd at 7.30pm at 19, Grantchester Road. This new course, called ‘The Unseen Creation’ looks at how we imagine both heaven and hell might be like, what we believe, or don’t believe about Angels and the Communion of the Saints and, finally, how the Holy Spirit fits in to God’s unseen creation. The evenings will be Nov 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th and December 1st and will each last for about an hour and a half. Please talk to Marcus if you are interested in being part of this.
Autumn Talks: There are six talks, all starting at successive Wednesdays, at 5.30pm, remaining from our Autumn series. On November 2nd the Revd. Dr. John Polkinghorne, former President of Queens’ College will talk on ‘One Science, Many Faiths’. On November 9th Professor Richard Rubenstein of George Mason University in Washington, USA will talk on ‘Theology and Violence in the 21st Century’ and, finally, on November 16th, the Revd. Dr. Maggi Dawn, Chaplain of Robinson College will talk about ‘Should the Church be ‘Relevant’?
Vicar-Chaplain’s Letter
Again there is only the briefest of spaces to write a Vicar-Chaplain’s letter this month. This, in itself, is a sure sign of a healthy and vibrant Church life with a wide range of activities for people to become involved in. During the past three months of Fraser’s sabbatical period I would like to warmly thank both the Churchwardens, the Deputy Churchwardens and so many members of both the Chapter and the congregation for all the help they have given me during that time. It has been absolutely invaluable for the smooth-running of the parish. In particular, the members of the Fabric Committee have ploughed through an impressive array of miscellaneous tasks.
Fraser continues to make excellent progress in his recovery and will hopefully be joining in some of our worship this month. I know he is very eager to return to normal life after his operation and hopes to lead some prayers during our worship as well as preach during our ‘Sensing the Sacred’ series of sermons in the second half of the month.
During November we hope to start work on replacing the lights in the nave of the Church. A provisional date has been set for the contractors to move in and they hope to have the Church completely lit up by Christmas. This will mean that, with the work done in the Chancel just before Easter, 2005 will have witnessed a completely new lighting scheme being installed in St. Edward’s.
