Ash Wednesday: What Became of Sin?

The first day of Lent falls this year on March 1st, and there will a special service of Holy Communion at 7.30 pm (NB not 6.30 as announced previously). It will be in the style of the 5.00 pm on Sunday, though shorter and with a more penitential focus. During the service there will be imposition of ashes on the forehead.

Following the service there will be a discussion, over refreshments, on ‘What Became of Sin?’ This will be led by Fraser, picking up ideas from the sermon, and looking at how modern psychology helps us to understand the concept of sin better. Ash Wednesday is a somber and beautiful occasion that can be very helpful, and we hope may members of the congregation will try to come along.

Lent Talks and Discussions on Christian Belief in a Scientific Age

On Thursdays in Lent, here will be a series of short talks and discussions, led by Fraser, probably in Queens’ College (to be confirmed). Refreshments will be available from 7.15pm; the talks will begin at 7.45 pm.

Patronal Festival: This will be kept on Sunday March 19th. The preacher at Mattins will be the Revd Richard Lloyd-Morgan, Chaplain of King’s College, and there will be the usual lunch in Trinity Hall.

Healing: There will be laying on of hands for healing at the 5.00 pm service on March 26th (Lent 4).

Mothering Sunday: We particularly invite those who have been baptized at St Edward’s, and other children associated with our church, to come to the 11.00 am service on March 26th, which will be adapted for an all-age congregation.

Holistic Spirituality Group: Sundays at 3.30 pm in Church. All welcome.
February 26th Fraser Watts Jung and Christian Renewal (continued)
March 12th Alex Dent Practical Spirituality in Modern Healthcare

Goth Eucharists: There will be two more of these services this term, on February 28th and March 14th.
On Feb 28th, BBC 1 will film for the Heaven and Earth Show. On March 14th we will be joined by a party from Coventry Cathedral, and the preacher will be the Revd Ravi Holy, from St Luke’s, Battersea.

Joint Communion Service: On Sunday April 2nd there will be the first of an occasional series of joint Parish Communions at 11.00 am for both morning and evening congregations. There will be no evening service on that day. This service will bring together elements of both the usual morning and evening Communion services, and will be an important opportunity for the two congregations to share Communion, and to get to know each other better. We hope that members of both congregations will make every effort to be present.(The 11.00 am Prayer Book Communion in April will be on April 16th, Easter Day).

Churchwardens: Wardens for the coming year will be elected at a brief Meeting of Parishioners that will be held in Church immediately after Mattins on Sunday March 12th. They will be admitted to office by the Master of Trinity Hall at the Patronal Festival Mattins on March 19th.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting: This will be held at 2.00 pm on Saturday April 22nd, in Church.

Flowers: We are looking for a new person to coordinate the arranging of flowers from Easter onwards. If you can help, please let one of the Clergy or Wardens know.

Chapter: The Chapter will meet at 6.00 pm on Monday March 13th in Queens College.

Chaplain’s Letter

I am grateful to everyone who came to the special Parochial Church Meeting on 11th March, and for the courteous way in which most of the discussion was conducted. It was encouraging to see so much interest in Church affairs. I was particularly grateful for the full support shown for the changes to the pattern of services at 11.00 o'clock that I had proposed. It was good that we had a clear-cut result, one way or the other. A 50/50 result would have been the worst result of all.

I hope that the new pattern of services will help the Church to continue to build and grow over the coming months and years, and that we will be able to meet the spiritual needs of an increasing number of people. Alongside this, I hope that we can continue to be as attentive as possible to the needs and wishes of long-standing Church members who value the Book of Common Prayer. Even though I had concluded it was right or us to change the balance between different kinds of services, I have no thoughts of abandoning the Book of Common Prayer, and I do not want to lose Church members who are committed to it.

It was another encouraging feature of the Church meeting that it provided an opportunity for people from different congregations to meet each other. People seemed pleased to get to know one another better. The first of the joint Communion Services, in April, will provide another opportunity to build on that, and the Chapter will discuss in the near future how else we can strengthen the unity and fellowship of the congregation.
