Joint Parish Communion:
On Whit Sunday, there will be a joint Parish Communion for morning and evening congregations at 11.00 am, so there will be no evening service that day. The preacher will be Malcolm Guite, our new Associate Chaplain. After the service there will be a parish lunch in the Old Hall at Queens’ College. Cost £3.00. Please sign up on the list at the back of the Church.
Odyssey: At the special Church Meeting in February we decided to start a new monthly service of the word, which we will call ‘Odyssey’. It will normally be on the first Sunday of the month and will begin at 11.00 am on Sunday July 2nd when Donald Reeves will talk about ‘The Moral Imagination: Reconciliation in Bosnia’. There are handbills available giving details of the programme for the first six months of Odyssey. Please take a copy, and give one to anyone you know who might be interested. We are hoping this new service will be of interest in people who was sympathetic to spiritual values but who are not drawn to ordinary church services.
Ordinands: Adrian Whitehall and Linda Duckers, who have been training for ordination at Ridley Hall, will be leaving us at the end of this term, and we will say out good-bye to them at the 5.00 pm service on June 11th. Adrian will be going to the Diocese of Sheffield, and will be ordained Deacon on 25th June. Linda will be going to the Leek in the Diocese of Lichfield and, after a summer break, will be ordained on 1st October. Andrew Hammond will continue at Westcott and we hope to see more of him next year.
Tim Rogers: Tim died, after a long illness, on 12th May. The funeral service will be at 2.00 pm pn Friday 26th May. We give thanks for Tim, and remember Eva in our prayers.
Goth Eucharists: There will be further Goth Eucharists on June 6th and 20th, at 8.30 for 8.45pm.

Associate Chaplains
Marcus Ramshaw: At the end of June, Marcus Ramshaw completes his period as Associate Chaplain at St Edward’s. He has made an important contribution to the life of our Church over the last 2-3 years, and we have much to be grateful to him for. There are three things in particular that I would single out. He has helped to build up the congregation for our evening service, and in particular to strengthen the contingent of young people attending regularly. He has also started the Goth Eucharist which is now well-established and attended regularly by a significant number of young people, including some who would not normally come to church services. The Goth Eucharist has been widely publicized and has led to a number of similar services being set up elsewhere. Marcus has also made a major contribution to our educational programme, and in particular has run a very successful series of home-based educational courses, such as The Unseen Creation. He is still looking for the right thing to do next, and I hope that we will see a good deal of him at St Edwards as long as he is in Cambridge. In particular, he will continue to officiate at the Goth Eucharist for the time being. We will say thank you to him for what he has done as Associate Chaplain at the 5.00 pm service on 25th June.
Malcolm Guite: Our new Associate Chaplain will be the Revd. Dr .Malcolm Guite. He is part-time Chaplain at Girton College (60%) and will combine that with being our Associate Chaplain. Malcolm is in his late-forties, and married to Maggie; they have two children. Maggie will shortly become Vicar of Newnham; and from late August Malcolm will be living in St Mark's Vicarage. Malcolm has 16 years' experience of ordained ministry, having served in parishes in Ely and Huntingdon and in educational ministry at Anglia Ruskin University, and at Girton college. He is a poet, and is particularly interested in the relationship between literature and religion. He will be in tune with the various strands of what we are do at St Edwards. He has a strong affection for the Book of Common Prayer, but is also enthusiastic about alternative forms of worship and fresh expressions. We look forward to all that he will be able to contribute to the next phase of the life of St Edward’s Church. He will be starting with us at the beginning of June, to provide overlap with Marcus, though he has a number of prior commitments over the summer. He will need to divide his Sunday evenings between Girton and ourselves, being at Girton in term time, and with us in the vacations.
Chaplain’s Letter
At the February Church meeting it was pointed out that we needed more volunteers to help to run the Church. Several people responded to that call, and I am most grateful to them. We have recently lost several experienced members of the Chapter who have given excellent service to the Church, but we have been able to find good replacements, and I think we now have a very strong Chapter indeed. There is a broad age range (with an average around mid-fifties), a good gender balance, and broad representation of different services and different strands of opinion. There is also a good range of expertise and experience. We are fortunate to have two such excellent Churchwardens. Elizabeth Edwards has told me she would like this to be her last year. However, I am not too alarmed even by that, as I am hopeful we will be able to find a good replacement from among recently elected chapter members. Of course, there are places where we still need more help. One of the things I will ask Malcolm to do in his early months is to identify the jobs that need doing, and to be on the look out for people who might be willing to do them. However, we are clearly now pulling out of a difficult period in which we have been very stretched to keep the various bases manned. In this, and in many other ways, the future looks very encouraging. Fraser Watts
