There will be special Parochial Church Meeting at 2.00 pm on Saturday February 11th in Church to discuss issues arising from my paper Priorities for Ministry. The meeting is for those on the Electoral Roll only, and a list of names of those on the roll will be posted in Church, and is available on request. The Chapter has asked me to prepare examples of the kind of new services suggested in my paper, and they will be circulated to those on the electoral roll, together with a notice of the meeting. Sermon Series
Morning: In the weeks leading up to Lent (Septuagesima, Sexagesima and Quinqagesima), the clergy of St Edward’s will preach a series of sermons at Mattins which will in turn direct our attention
(a) inwards to ourselves, as we prepare for Lent (Fraser Watts, Feb 12th)
(b) upwards to God and to saving work of Jesus Christ (Alan Cole, Feb 19th)
(c) outwards to the world, as we work for a kingdom of peace and justice (Marcus Ramshaw, Feb 26th)
Evening: At the 5.00 pm Eucharist on these weeks, Fraser will preach a series on ‘God and Goodness’, looking at the Christian approach to morality.
Feb 12th: Is there a moral crisis? Feb 19th: What is Jesus approach? Feb 26th: Leading a good life.
Appointments: Mrs Phyllis Osbourn resigned as Chaplain’s Warden prior to her operation. After consultation, I have appointed Mr Peter Marshall as Acting Chaplain’s Warden, subject to confirmation at the Church Meeting on Feb 11th. Dr Kevin Dutton resigned as Treasurer and from the Chapter with effect from Dec 31st. The Chapter has appointed Mr Geoffrey Barnes, both as Treasurer and to fill the casual vacancy among elected Chapter members. The Chapter also co-opted Mr James Dent to the Chapter. Fraser Watts

Chaplain’s Letter
The church meeting on 11th February is an important occasion in the life of our church, and an opportunity to discuss together what direction the church should go in over the coming years. Please come and make your views known. You can also write in through the Churchwardens or myself; I am grateful to those who have already written to me. It will also be a chance for people on the electoral roll to get to know one another better.
Some of you will have seen the recent publicity for our ‘Goth Eucharist’. Jesus insisted on reaching out to people to surprising people, including those that society disapproved of, and the church must always follow that example. We need the kind of ‘fresh expression’ of Church that the Archbishop of Canterbury has called for, ‘new and different ways of being church in a changing culture’, ways that ‘begin where people are, and make church and community there’ (see www.freshexpressions.org.uk). The whole Church of England is being encouraged to experiment in such ways, and I see the Goth Eucharist as St Edward’s small contribution to that. We have received much support and encouragement from clergy from all over the country.
The service is very orthodox. Indeed, one of the things that has surprised me is how minor changes to the service are enough to draw in people who would not normally come to church. I have usually preached myself, and my address at the last service was a Bible-based exposition of the significance of the story of the raising of Lazarus in John 11. I am grateful to Marcus for creating opportunities to preach the Christian gospel to people who would not normally hear it. Perhaps the most distinctive thing about the goth outlook is that they have a strong sense of the darkness of life. In preaching to them, it is essential to acknowledge that fully before proclaiming that Jesus Christ, the light of the world, ‘shines in the darkness, and the darkness has never overcome it’, just as Christians always need to fully acknowledge that creation is fallen, before proclaiming the saving love of God.
