Chaplain's Letter

We come now to a dark time of the year, but in the midst of that darkness we come to a light, or rather, that light comes to us. The mystery of incarnation is not over, the one who was born in human flesh in Bethlehem is still coming to us, still being born, painfully, in the dark, in our midst and deep within us, if we will let him. That is what Advent is for, letting him be born, and it is the most difficult time of year. We have made it so. Once Advent could be kept quietly, like lent, as a season of penitence, purification, preparation, as the fast before the feast. So that then we could come to the twelve days of Christmas by sudden and wonderful contrast. We could delight in the light and the tinsels and the feasting, instead of being tired of them and oppressed by the enforced jollity and bling in the shops that has been dragging on since early November. We can't change that now, all we can try to do is preserve, somewhere in each day of advent a little pool of quiet into which we can dip our souls, a little empty space within, in which to plant a seed of Christ-light, so that come the day there is a place and a space for the Christ-child who will surely renew us in the renewing of the year. I hope that St Edwards will serve for you this advent as a keeper of that inner space, a kindler of that inner light, a place of stillness and refuge from the bustle, a womb in which your Christ-child can grow.
