First Joint Parish Communion

The first of the occasional series of joint Parish Communions for both morning and evening congregations will be held at 11.00 am on Sunday 2nd April, Passion Sunday. This will be an important occasion in our Church life, and we hope all members of both morning and evening congregations will make every effort to attend. The preacher will be the Dean of Trinity Hall, Dr Jeremy Morris.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting will be held in Church at 2.00 pm on Saturday 22nd April. Members of the Electoral Roll are encouraged to attend. The roll is being revised, and those who are eligible are invited to enrol if they have not already done so. Please let Marcus have completed forms by the end of March. The new Chapter will meet for the first time at 6.00 pm on Tuesday 2nd May.

Sunday Morning Services

Over the next few months we will be moving to a new pattern of Sunday morning services:
1st Sunday in the month: The new, experimental Service of the Word. This will start in July, though in April and June there will be a special joint Parish Communion for both morning and evening congregations.
3rd Sunday in the month: A Prayer Book service of Holy Communion, starting on Easter Day, April 16th.
Other Sundays in the month: Mattins and Sermon.
There will be occasional variations to this pattern for special occasions. We have put on the first Sunday the service that is most likely to attract people who come for that service. Then, to space out services of Mattins, we have out the Prayer Book Communion on the 3rd Sunday.

Holy Week Services:

Holy Week provides a unique opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Jesus as he goes towards the cross. Do come and share in the weeks’ services as much as you are able, and allow your own personal issues to be transformed by putting them in the context of Jesus’ story.

On Palm Sunday we commemorate the arrival in Jerusalem. On the next three days, we commemorate some of the moving events of Jesus’ last week, such as the cleansing of the temple (Monday), Jesus weeping over Jerusalem (Tuesday) and the anointing of Jesus at Bethany (Wednesday). On Maundy Thursday we go with the disciples to the Upper Room, joining like them in the washing of feet and in the sharing of bread and wine that Jesus said was his body and blood. This year the services from Monday to Thursday will be at 7.30 pm, which we hope will be a more convenient time.

On Good Friday, we ponder the mystery of Jesus on the cross. The preacher will be the Bishop of Huntingdon, the Rt Revd John Inge. As usual, the service will be in three sections of an hour each, and we understand that people may need to come and go. On Easter Eve, there is the vigil service at Ely Cathedral at which two members of the congregation will be confirmed (see below). On Easter Day we rediscover, with the original disciples, that Jesus is with us as a living presence.

Confirmation: Two members of the congregation will be confirmed at the Easter Eve Vigil Service at Ely Cathedral at 7.30 pm on Saturday April 15th, Marilyn Stanley and Steven Mastin. Any members of the congregation who would like to go and support them at this moving service would be most welcome.

Churchwardens: Dr Elizabeth Edwards and Mr Peter Marshall were re-elected as Churchwardens and admitted to office at the Patronal Festival. During the year, Peter Marshall will stand down as Chaplain’s Warden, and Mr Jesse Billett will be nominated to replace him.

Holistic Spirituality Group: The next meeting will be at 3.30 pm on Sunday 2nd April, when Fraser will lead a discussion on a Jungian approach to Christ.

Meditation. The Friday meditation group will be led by Aileen Taylor on March 31st, and by Fraser on April 7th. It will not meet on Good Friday, resuming on April 21st.

Goth Eucharist: The Goth Eucharist on March 28th will be televised by BBC1 for the Heaven and Earth Show, and will be shown on April 2nd or soon after. The there will then be a break for Easter vacation; the first Goth Eucharist of the Easter Term will be on Tuesday April 25th.

Nave Lighting: Lighting in the nave is to be renewed, with bulbs that will last longer and can be dimmed. It is expected that work will begin on 24th April and will last about four weeks.

Christian Belief in a Scientific Age: The last two meetings, held in the Solarium of Queens’ College at 7.45 pm, will be:
March 30th Does Evolution Reflect God’s Purposes?
April 6th How does Science Affect Christian Belief?

Vicar-Chaplain: Revd. Dr. Fraser Watts (19, Grantchester Road, CB3 9ED; 359223); Church phone: 362004 Associate: Revd. Marcus Ramshaw (07886 318039) Assistant: Canon Alan Cole (892286) People’s Warden & Chapter Sec: Dr. Elizabeth Edwards (313570), Reader & Chaplain’s Warden: Mr. Peter Marshall (564471); Treasurer: Mr Geoffrey Barnes
